Meeting people
Hi, I'm David, nice to meet you.
Where are you from?
I'm from Italy
What do you do for a living?
I'm an engineer
I work in a factory
Do you know her?
I work with her.
We are on holiday together. We are friends.
Can you introduce me to your friends?
Why are you visiting France?
My cousin lives near Lyon.
I like to practice my French.
Are you here on business or for pleasure?
Unfortunately business. I am here for three days then I am flying back to the States. You don't get to see much of the countries you visit, just hotels and officies. At least you get to sample the local food and drinks.
It gets me out of the office.
Do you travel much?
I go abroad about once a month. Other than that I am normally in the office.
That's not too bad. That's good. Sounds fun. Sounds terrible.
What is there to do around here in the evening?
We tend to go to Birmingham when we want to have some fun.
There are a lot of restaurants, bars, pubs, and nightclubs.
It's really lively and there is a nice atmosphere.
Most evenings we go to the local pub.
It's not very lively but the beer's good and you can play darts.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I like going bowling, walking up mountains, watching the football, meeting my friends.
I can't stand load music. Can we go somewhere else?
It's not a good idea to stare at people too much. You can get into trouble, or a fight.
Family
Are you married?
Yes, I am. I've been married for three years.
Have you got a boyfriend back in Greece?
No, I'm single.
Yes, he's my fiancè, actually.
What's your girlfriend's name?
Have you got any children? Yes, I've got two children. I've got a son and a daughter.
How old are they?My son is 10 and my daughter is 5.
It must be hard work.
I don't have any children.
When are you getting married? We're getting married in June, next year.
We haven't set a date yet. Hopefully we will get married next year.
Have you got any brothers or sisters?
I've got two brothers and one sister.
Wow, that's a big family.
Finding places
Excuse me, where is the toilet?
Where is the high street?
It is a pedestrian area, so you'll need to park your car at the multi-story carpark.
Where are the shops? They are straight on, over there.
Do you know where ther Doctors' surgery is?
No, I'm sorry. I don't know this area at all.
Where can I buy some cigarettes? You can get cigarettes in that supermarket over there.
Excuse me, where is the nearest ATM? I need some cash.
The bank across the road has got a cash point. That one there.
Thank you very much.
You're welcome. Don't mention it. It was nothing.
Food
What do you think about English food?
Where can you go to get real traditiaonal German food?
What is your favourite dish?
There are three main meals a day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
In England, tea is a snack. It is usually served at about 4.30 in the afternoon.
Breakfast is an important meal.
Apart from the weekend, lunch is not an important meal for the English. In Italy, lunch is very important.
Can I have a slice of chocolate cake please?
The main food groups are meat, fish, vegetables, milk products and cerials.
The English drink a lot of both coffee and tea. Both drinks are long drinks. Espressos are not very popular, but cappucino is becoming more popular.
The main types of meat are chicken, turkey, pork, beef and lamb,
English people do not eat much veal, rabbit or horse.
The best fish restaurants in England are in the big cities not on the coast.
Italians eat a lot of veal. Rabbit is a real speciallity.
What are aubergines? They are fat purple vegetables. They are soft inside.
What are cougettes? They are like green carrots but not as hard.
What is this?
It is sweed. It's like a sweet potatoe.
It's very nice, try a bit.
How is your lamb?
It's lovely, but what is this green sauce?
